Collapsing Structure of Miawani L/A Primary Driving Pupils Away

The poor condition of Miawani L/A Primary School in the Suhum Municipality of the Eastern region is discouraging many parents from sending their children to School.

Children who cannot walk four(4) miles to Kukua community near Suhum or swim the river Densu to New Asuoyaa sit at home until they reach a certain age when they are capable of trekking.

Miawani L/A School was built 20 years ago with mud and palm-fronds through Communal labour out of the quest of the community to educate their children.  But the building has never been renovated hence keeps deteriorating with the walls falling apart.

The structure was to accommodate only up to class four(4) pupils due to inadequate classrooms. The few pupils who risk their lives to attend the school after Class 4, have no option than to walk long distances to continue class five.

The Headteacher of the school, Adakpo Emmanuel told Starr News the condition of the school has affected enrollment and quality education delivery. He added that with the onset of the rains, academic exercise will be disrupted because the safety of pupils and teachers cannot be guaranteed hence school will close whenever it is about to rain.
