Former President Mahama has urged President Akufo-Addo to contest as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate in the 2020 polls.
Mr. Mahama, who suggested that President Akufo-Addo is undecided on leading his party in the 2020 polls, called on him to consider running.
Speaking to party delegates in the Nkoranza South constituency during a campaign tour, he said the 2020 polls will be the final decider between him and President Akufo Addo.
“I am begging President Nana Akufo Addo to contest in the next polls. In boxing, the first fight is called the title fight. If you win that fight and your opponent wants another one, it is called a rematch.
This is similar to what happened in 2012 when I beat Nana Addo in the polls. In 2016 however, I was defeated. In the 2020 elections, it will be tantamount to a decider in boxing since we have both won the election once, the next poll will determine who the champion really is.”
I’m yet to tell NPP whether I’ll contest 2020 polls – Akufo-Addo
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is still undecided on leading his governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2020 polls.
According to the 74-year old, there have been moves by the NPP to get him to contest as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2020 polls.
He however said he was yet to give a firm answer to the calls from the rank and file of the party.
Speaking on a visit to his alma mater — Lancing Secondary School in the United Kingdom a few days ago, he said: “My party is keen on the agenda that I go again in 2020; we will see.”
On December 7, 2016, then-candidate Akufo-Addo, on his third attempt to occupy the highest office of the land, led the NPP to its most significant electoral victory in history when he polled 5,716,026 votes, representing 53.9 percent of the popular votes cast, to beat the incumbent John Dramani Mahama, who garnered 4,713,277 votes, representing 44.4 percent of the votes cast.
