The Government of the Republic of Ghana has declared Tuesday 21st August 2018 a public holiday. This is to mark Eid-ul Adha.
A short statement released by the Minister of Interior, Ambrose Dery, on Wednesday 15th August 15, 2018 said the day “Should be observed as such throughout the country”.
The statement reads, “The general public is hereby informed that Tuesday, 21st August, 2018 which marks the celebration of EIDUL-ADHA, is a statutory public holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.”
Eid-ul Adha, the second of two Islamic holidays, is the festival of sacrifice for Muslims.It honors the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah.
An animal is sacrificed and divided into three parts: one third of the share is given to the poor and needy; another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors; and the remaining third is retained by the family.
In the Islamic Lunar calendar, Eid-ul Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu Al-Hijjah.
