A pharmacognosist, Dr Moses De-Gaulle Dogbatsey, has dismissed the perception that having too much sex can cause prostate problems in men.
Rather, Dr Dogbatsey, who is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Medi Moses Prostate Centre, said more sex by men could delay prostate problems, including increase in the size of the prostate.
“Frequent sex can help to slow down prostate problems. Some prostatitis symptoms can be relieved by frequent sexual activity and in older men regular ejaculation has protective effects against prostate cancer. A higher frequency of ejaculation is associated with a decreased risk of developing prostate cancer,” Dr Dogbatsey said.
Caution
Dr Dogbatsey, however, made it clear that the import of his comments was not to promote multiple sexual partners but to clear the misconception that a higher frequency of sex was the source of prostate enlargement and consequence cancer.
“The semen that sperm swims in is produced by the prostate and it is stored in a place called seminal vesicle and so when the prostate releases it, it becomes decongested and so it helps a lot. More sex means that the prostate is always decongested”, he stated.
Sexual weakness
He said benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a normal enlargement of the prostate, was another cause of sexual weakness.
“Sexual weakness is related to that because the function of the prostate gland itself is for reproduction and there are three things that can be involved in that – the testis, prostate and the penis.
“The three of them are in the same area and they are friends, so when the prostate is affected by way of simulation the penis is also affected, so you have sexual weakness,” he explained.
Dr Dogbatsey indicated that in his medical practice of past 23 years he had come across thousands of men at his centre with a common problem of erectile dysfunction.
According to him, a report published in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) showed that men who reported having more than 20 ejaculations per month were 33 per cent less likely to develop prostate cancer.
“An Australian study of 2,338 men also came to a similar conclusion. This study found that men who averaged 4.6 to seven ejaculations a week were 36 per cent less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 70 compared to men who ejaculated less than 2.3 times a week on average.
“The study found no connection between prostate cancer and the number of sex partners,” he said.
Sex and prostate cancer
He said prostate cancer rarely caused problems with sex but the treatments for prostate cancer often affected penile function and reproduction.
“Prostate surgery and radiation are the two most common treatments for prostate cancer. Both of these can affect the nerves in your penis and could cause sexual problems such as erectile dysfunction (ED).
“Cryotherapy and ultrasound therapy can also cause ED. Your doctor may recommend hormone therapy or radiation therapy as well. This therapy can lower your sex drive. Radical prostatectomy is the most effective nerve-sparing surgery for prostate cancer. It can substantially limit the duration of post-surgical ED but requires a surgeon to be highly skilled and trained in the process,” he said.
Procedure
He said the surgeon would have to take extra care in order not to damage the nerves responsible for erection around the prostate as it was being removed.
“However, if cancer has infiltrated these nerves, it may not be possible to save them. Preventing injury to these nerves dramatically improves the chances of a man recovering erectile function within two years of the surgery.
“In addition to erectile dysfunction, you may also find that your orgasms are different after undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. They may not feel as strong, and you will not see as much ejaculation,” he added.
Treatment
The CEO of the Medi Moses Group of Companies said several studies had shown food supplements offered a natural and safe way to help treat prostate disorder without the need for medical intervention and side effects.
For example, he said Prostacure, in all of its different formulations, contained herbs that had been proven to help decrease the prostate gland by shrinking the enlarged prostate and increasing the body’s testosterone levels. It also helps to produce stronger erections naturally.
“Good blood flow is essential to getting and maintaining an erection. Taking a 100 per cent natural and organic treatment can make capillaries open and blood flow easier and can help treat erectile dysfunction effectively and safely.
“Sex after prostate cancer might not seem possible, but it is. It is important to be patient with yourself and understand that your body is going through a lot. Once treatments have been completed, take your time getting back into sex,” he said.
