Cops, Land Guards Terrorize Abokobi Residents

Residents of Abokobi, Akporman and its environs in the Ga East District in the Greater Accra Region sit on tenterhooks as land guards continue to terrorize their lives.

This is because serving police officers expected to bring their activities under control have allegedly acquired lands from them thus defeating moves by the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander to clamp down activities of the land guards.

They are ASP George Attia, the Ayi- Mensah Police Commander, Cprl. David Asiedu Ansah, Mobile Police Force 37; D/L/CPRL David Kangwononuo of Abokobi and Akporman Police Station and one DSP Quarshie.

In a petition to the Inspector General of Police, (IGP), David Asante Appeatu dated November 10, 2017 the families of Agbawe Quarter of Nuumo Nmashue Family at Teshie claimed that D/L/ Cprl. Kangwononuo, Cprl. Asiedu Ansah and their land guard counterparts headed by one Yaw Dartey aka Wofa Yaw and others illegally invaded “our lands at Abokobi and its environs, selling, digging and constructing structures”

It said “when family members and elders attempted to stop them, they got more agitated and issued out words of threats to the family members and elders to wit: if you dare come here to stop us again, we would kill you and your family members.”

According to the petition signed by one Francis Nii Adjei Akporh Obedeka, Elder of the Nuumo Nmashie family and two others, the police-land guards further added: “you villagers have been reporting us to the courts to stop us but we know the courts more than you do and the courts cannot stop us. You would eventually be crushed and buried with the injunction papers you are pasting on the land.”

The petitioners further indicated that a number of police vehicles particularly vehicle with registration number GP 3811 have constantly been spotted and often seen loaded with bags of cement at the construction sites.

“The officer often seen using the said vehicle mentioned his name as DSP Quashie when he was confronted. The Ayi Mensah Police Commander (who was mentioned as George Attia by his contracted workers) has also been spotted and mentioned in relation with construction on a four plots land sited on a proposed school site. Coprl. Asiedu Ansah is also cited building on a major proposed road” the petition disclosed.

In the view of the petitioners, the constant posing of “these negative minded police officers on the lands in question has encouraged the land guards to operate better” insisting that “the said police officers are shamelessly destroying the image and the professional capacity of the Ghana police service.”
