A mason has been fined GH¢3000 by the Accra Circuit Court for slashing the wrist of his wife and threatening to kill her.
The convict, Emmanuel Ayikwei, will serve 18 months in jail if he fails to pay the fine.
Apart from the fine, the court also ordered Ayikwei to compensate his wife, Racheal Adasu, with Gh₵500 and also pay the Gh₵270 medical bills she spent as a result of the injuries she suffered at his hands.
Ayikwei was further ordered by the court to sign a bond to be of good behaviour for a year.
Failure to abide by the bail terms will result in an additional six months in jail for the mason.
Ayikwei pleaded guilty to threat of death and causing harm, and was sentenced by the court, presided over by, Mrs Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku, on his own plea.
Missing GH¢1000
The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Kofi Atimbire, told the court that Ayikwei and Racheal resided in the same house with three children at Glefe near Dansoman.
On April 24, 2018, he said Racheal detected that her Gh₵1000 was missing and she asked Ayikwei if he had seen the money.
But the question angered Ayikwei, and he picked a cutlass, chased Racheal and started shouting “I will kill today’’.
“Racheal run into a conatianer for safety, but Ayikwei got her and cut her left wrist. The crying of Racheal attracted some neighbours, who stopped Ayikwei from further hurting his wife,’’ the prosecutor said.
Chief Inspector Atimbire said a complaint was lodged with the police, leading to the arrest of Ayikwei.
Your children saved you
In passing sentence, the presiding judge said, she would had slapped Ayikwei with a custodial sentence, but decided on a fine due to the fact that he was a first time offender and also had children to cater for.
She, however, warned Ayikwei never to indulge in such a despicable act, or else he would be sent straight to jail.
