A Nurse at the Damango Government Hospital who is being accused of raping an European tourist on admission at the health facility is set to face the disciplinary committee of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwifery Council.
Twenty-eight-year-old Ernest Green is currently in police custody for allegedly raping the patient who came to the facility to seek treatment for malaria last Friday.
President of the Ghana Council, Kwaku Asante Krobea, said his outfit has also set up an investigative committee to probe the matter.
The tourist, who is also a social worker, had visited the Mole National Park last Wednesday from her Volta Region base when she took ill and was rushed to the hospital.
Public Relations Officer of the Northern Region Police command, ASP Yussif Tanko, who confirmed the story to Joy News’ said the rape incident allegedly occurred in a private ward of the hospital.
Mr Green has denied raping the anonymous tourist.
Giving details of the steps the Council intends to take, Mr Asante-Krobea said “we will set up a disciplinary committee to deal with the matter…but that aspect about the criminal case the association cannot go into that because it is in the hands of the police.”
Police are yet to receive the medical report to prove that the tourist was raped.
“[Mr Green] anything like that anything like that happened so it is now up to us try to carry on with investigations to try to establish the case against him or prove his innocence,” said ASP Tanko.
Allegation
Police said the Mr Green allegedly asked the victim if she would prefer a private ward when she was checked in at the health facility, but the tourist opted for the sideward because she felt weak.
The tourist told the police that the suspect frequented her ward many times before the rape incident.
The tourist’s account of events claimed Mr Green told her to relax when he realised that his frequent visits made her uncomfortable.
According to the alleged victim, on the day she was raped, she came back from the washroom very weak, because she was suffering from a running stomach, to meet the Mr Green in her room.
She said because of her condition she could not get onto the bed, and hence reluctantly accepted Mr Green’s help.
Her account events to the police claims the suspect after helping her onto the bed sat by her side, started fondling her breast and eventually had unprotected sex with her.
The victim later lodged a complaint at the Damongo Police Station leading to Mr Green’s arrest.
Mr Green in his statement to the police denied the allegations.
According to ASP Yussif Mohammed Tanko, the Northern Regional headquarters of the police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has taken over the investigation.
Some tests have been conducted and a team of investigators would be dispatched to the crime scene Monday, he added.
The police PRO said a provisional rape charge has been proffered against the Mr Green.
