Besiktas has officially terminated its contract with Ghanaian defender Daniel Amartey by mutual agreement, making the 29-year-old a free agent.
Amartey, who joined the Turkish club in 2023 on a two-year deal, is now free to explore new opportunities after a recent transfer saga led to his departure.
Besiktas had been actively seeking to sell the center-back, with one year remaining on his contract. However, the situation became complicated when Amartey allegedly refused to travel for a potential transfer.
According to the club’s spokesperson, Huseyin Yucel, Amartey expressed interest only in a move to England, despite the transfer window already closing.
Amartey, however, denied these claims, calling the allegations “untrue.” On Saturday, Besiktas released an official statement, confirming that the contract between the club and Amartey had been terminated by mutual consent.
This season, Amartey had yet to feature for Besiktas, and his departure opens the door for him to sign with any club of his choosing. The Ghana international, who was part of Leicester City’s historic Premier League-winning squad in the 2015/16 season, has earned 55 caps with the Black Stars.
His most recent national team call-up came for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast. Now, as a free agent, the experienced defender will be seeking fresh opportunities to continue his career at the top level.
