Daring Chinese man defies Akufo-Addo’s order …as he mines gold illegally

PRESIDENT NANA Akufo-Addo’s determination and efforts to get rid of illegal mining aka ‘Galamsey’ in the country is being undermined by a certain ‘brave’ Chinese national.

Identified by the police as Wu Quiliang, the Chinse national was apprehended at Adansi Brofoyedru in the Ashanti Region, mining for gold in the bush at 3:50 on October 26.

Interestingly, Wu Quiliang was apprehended at a time that the issue of illegal mining and its adverse effects on the environment and waterbodies has become a major national concern.

The Chinese man, said to be 45 years old, was reportedly caught in the act as he was using sophisticated machines to break the ground for gold.

A Fomena District Police Sitrep in the Ashanti Region said Quiliang was arrested alongside his Ghanaian partner in crime by name
Albert Amponsah, who is 28 years old.

“On 26/10/22 at about 3:50pm, the police patrol team on routine operations, arrested and brought in suspects Albert Amponsah, 28 and Wu Quiliang, 45, a Chinese national.

“And reported that suspects were found mining illegally at one site in Adansi Brofoyedru with their excavator machine and other machinery”, part of the police report noted.

It said the two suspects are being caged by the police, adding “Exhibits, including four excavator batteries were brought to the police station for evidential purpose”.

According to the police, they would require the help of a specialist Chinese interpreter to assist the police to interrogate Quiliang before being hauled to court.

The police report also pointed out that they (police) would also “liaise with the immigration service for further action to be taken on the suspects”, especially the Chiense man.

Suspects Albert and Wu Quiliang would be sent to court for them to be remanded as investigation is on going, the police said.
