ACADEMIC WORK within the Ahwiaa Township in the Kwabre East Municipality in the Ashanti region came to an abrupt halt on Monday, following reports of a deadly clash between two feuding groups in the area.
Students, including kindergarten kids, were seen racing from clear and present danger as the two groups, wielding deadly weapons, openly butchered one another to the amazement of onlookers.
The Ashanti Regional Police PRO, ASP Juliana Obeng, told the media that In the course of the melee, one person, whose real identity is still unknown, was butchered to death while two other people also sustained severe body injuries.
She said the timely arrival of a joint military/police team helped restore law and order at the place, adding that 48 people, believed to part of the troublemakers, have been arrested.
Cause Of Fight
Unconfirmed reports say the two-feuding groups, who are from the Zongo and Akan areas in the community, clashed on Monday because of a love relationship issue.
One Yaw, an eye witness, said a Zongo boy was dating an Akan lady and so on Monday morning the relatives of the boy assaulted the lady, and sternly warned her that they did not support their relationship.
He disclosed the lady informed her relatives that she had been attacked by the family of her Zongo fiancée so they (Akan people) also retaliated in a brutal fashion, leading to the death of one person and several injuries.
Ghost Town
THE PUBLISHER learnt that the entire Ahwiaa Township was virtually turned into a ghost town as fear-stricken people remained indoors.
ASP Juliana Obeng said armed policemen were stationed at Ahwiaa and the nearby areas on Monday night in other to avert further clashes and bloodshed, assuring that total peace had been restored in the community.
Previous Clashes
It would be recalled that these same feuding groups clashed violently at Ahwiaa a few months ago over a similarly flimsy issue, which also resulted in the loss of a one life and destruction of valuable items.
