The highly anticipated Ghana International River Festival is set to return this year, offering a vibrant, family-friendly celebration of Ghana’s rich cultural heritage while promoting the vital need for environmental preservation along the Volta River.
The event, organized by Eco 3 Concepts, will bring together a unique blend of arts, education, and environmental activism aimed at raising awareness about the ecological importance of the Volta River and its surrounding environments.
Popularly known as Riverfestgh, the festival is not just a recreational even but also a call to action for communities to unite in the protection of one of Ghana’s most iconic natural resources.
According to the Chief Executive of Eco 3 Concepts Mawufemor Korbla Nornyibe, one of its key objectives is to address critical environmental issues, such as plastic waste and water pollution, that threaten the health of the river and its inhabitants through educational workshops, performances, and community engagements and also to highlight the dangers of waterborne diseases and the importance of sustainable living.
“We’re not just celebrating the beauty of our river and culture, but we’re also working toward solutions that protect this vital ecosystem for future generations,” he added.
Riverfestgh will feature a diverse array of activities designed for people of all ages. As visitors can enjoy educational workshops on environmental conservation, cultural performances, and even recreational water sports. For the younger generation, a special children’s area – where all activities are free of charge – will provide an interactive and fun environment to learn about both the arts and the environment.
In addition to local cultural displays, the festival will host an International Village that allows visitors to explore global cultures through food, crafts, and live performances to provide a unique opportunity for cultural exchange while celebrating the diverse communities that rely on the Volta River.
In addition to the festivities, the festival will spotlight the ecological beauty of the Volta Basin. The event’s organizers emphasize how tourism can be an essential tool for environmental preservation, creating economic opportunities for local communities while fostering a deep appreciation for the region’s natural resources.
“We see tourism as a way to create sustainable economic opportunities while promoting the protection of our environment,” Eco 3 Concepts highlights a healthy ecosystem benefit for the environment and the local economy, providing jobs, supporting local businesses, and encouraging community development.”
A significant component of Riverfestgh will be its fundraising efforts for key health and environmental initiatives. Proceeds from the festival will be directed toward local communities along the Volta River to help combat environmental degradation, prevent the spread of waterborne diseases, and improve healthcare access. One major goal is to raise funds for the acquisition of an ambulance boat, which will provide essential medical services to the remote communities along the river.
Eco 3 Concepts, a development-oriented organization with over a decade of experience in environmental protection, has been a leading advocate for safeguarding Ghana’s water bodies. The organization is particularly focused on empowering communities in the lower Volta Basin to adopt sustainable practices and combat climate change.
