Black Stars captain, Andre Dede Ayew, says lifting the AFCON trophy is his biggest dream after losing out on the chance to do so in two finals.
Ayew played for Ghana at the 2010 and 2015 AFCON final games against Egypt and Cote D’Ivoire respectively but lost both.
Ahead of making his eighth AFCON appearance, Ayew expressed his desire to win the AFCON title and his dedication to the course of the Black Stars.
Speaking in a presser ahead of Ghana’s opening game at the 2023 AFCON against Cape Verde on Sunday, January 14 at 20:00 GMT, Ayew said,
“The dream I’m living is fabulous but if I want it to be great and to be at the pinnacle, before I hang boots, to be able to lift that trophy one day that’s my biggest dream” he said.
Break Records
In the same interview, Dede Ayew, says he wants to break records at the 2023 AFCON in “winning situations”.
Ayew is on the verge of joining Cameroon legend Rigobert Song and Egypt legend Hassan Ahmed as the only players to play at eight AFCON tournaments.
The Le Havre forward is also on the verge of scoring in the AFCON for the seventh time to beat the likes of fellow Ghana forward Asamoah Gyan, Samuel Eto’o and Zambia’s Kalusha Bwalya.
However, Dede Ayew revealed in his address that he isn’t focused on individual achievements at the expense of achieving the team’s goals.
“I worked really hard to get into this situation and in this position but most importantly it’s the team. It’s what we are going to do to win games and if I’m able to break these with winning games so be it and that would be wonderful and that’s what I’m hoping for.”
Ghana is in Group B with Cape Verde, Egypt and Mozambique and is aiming to bounce back from suffering its worst AFCON campaign at the 2021 AFCON where the four time winners failed to win a game and exited at the group stage.
