The contractor on the Ayi Mensah-Danfa-Otinibi road in the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipality of Accra has resumed working in quest to make the road motorable.
This comes after residents of the area led by the Madina lawmaker, Francis-Xavier Sosu, held a demonstration on October 25, 2021.
They contend that the road is in a bad state and portions of it had become death traps.
Speaking in an interview with Citi News concerning the new development, the residents were hopeful that the contractor would see through the rehabilitation works which started in December 2020.
“I am praying that whatever is going on here is not going to be a nine-day wonder,” one resident said.
“The contractor made everybody know that when the rains go down, he will come on-site, so we are very happy that the contractor is in, and he has started work,” another added.
Reacting to the contractor getting back to work, Lawyer Francis Sosu in a Facebook post expressed excitement over the development and promised to continue to ensure quality work is done for the residents.
He wrote: “I am glad work is still ongoing at Kweiman, on the Ayi Mensah – Amrahia stretch of the road. I will follow through to ensure we have quality work on that stretch. I will keep fighting for you. This is why you voted for me.”
The October 25 demonstration over bad roads has been the source of controversy after attempts by the police service to invite the Madina MP for interrogation failed.
Mr. Sosu has said police maltreated him and tried to arrest him on the day of the protest.
This compelled him to file a formal complaint in Parliament accusing two police commanding officers of contempt of Parliament.
He further explained that the police demanded that he should report to the Regional Commander of Police for questioning after addressing his constituents.
Mr. Sosu said he however declined the invitation and indicated that he was to attend a parliamentary meeting in preparation for the resumption of the House.
He said the police officers ignored his explanation and attempted arresting him in the presence of his constituents, forcing him to ask the Speaker of Parliament to take action against the police officers in question.
“Indeed, once I got to Ayi Mensah, there was an Obonu FM reporter who joined my car and was with me till we got to Kweiman, where there was a roadblock. I got out of my car and went to speak with the youth in the presence of the police until we got them to clear the roads for people to move.”
“From Kweiman, I drove to Danfa, where we had a similar incident together with the burning of tyres. There again, I got out of the car, in the presence of police and, together with some of the officers, spoke with the angry youth and got them to join us to Otinibi,” he noted.
