Develop Positive Attitude Towards National Issues – Ghanaians Advised
A parade of security agencies, school children and volunteer organisations to mark Ghana’s 61st Independence Anniversary has been held in Kumasi with an advice to the citizenry to be patriotic.
Mr Simon Osei-Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Minister, said nation-building thrived on positive values and urged the people to be hard-working, disciplined and honest in their fields of endeavour.
He said Ghanaians should shun practices inimical to the progress of the nation as the socio-economic development indicators, after six decades of self-rule, could have been improved tremendously if the right things had been done by stakeholders.
The parade, under the command of Captain Hope Elorm Gamor of the Fourth Infantry Battalion (4BN) of the Ghana Armed Forces, had in attendance traditional authorities, ministers of state, members of Parliament, heads of departments and a cross-section of the public.
There were poetry recitals reminding the people of the successes chalked after 61 years of independence as well as the challenges confronting the nation and how they could be solved to improve the living conditions of the citizens.
“Ghana beyond Aid” was the theme for this year’s anniversary celebration.
Mr Osei-Mensah indicated that the Nana Akufo-Addo Administration was committed to fighting corruption in all its forms to protect the public purse.
Those who engaged in corrupt practices would be dealt with in accordance with the law irrespective of one’s political affiliation, he said.
The Regional Minister decried mismanagement of the economy, over the years, by self-seeking politicians and those entrusted with the responsibility of protecting the nation’s resources.
This, he said, was responsible for the mass poverty amongst the people and, as such, appealed to everyone to join in the Government’s campaign to promote fiscal discipline.
