The ambitious initiative designed to catalyze digital transformation within the public and private sector by the Akufo-Addo administration champion by the sector Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has seen the addition of DigSMART Scale-Up Platform for civil servants from diverse sectors, making significant gains.
The platform which is meant to train several participants is meant to equip the necessary skills to identify problem where digital technology could provide solutions, develop measurable and attainable goals, and execute digital projects that will prioritize the Ghanaian citizen’s needs and experiences.
Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful in her speech last Wednesday at the at the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT (KACE) said, DigSMART Scale-Up is not merely a training program but rather a holistic journey toward authentic transformation.
“In the rich tapestry of Ghana’s achievements, we proudly claim a spot among the top 10 nations in the UN’s E-Government Development Index. This recognition reflects our strength in telecommunications infrastructure, online services, and most significantly, in human capital – a focal point of our recent discussions. “Our government bears the responsibility of ensuring that every Ghanaian enjoys the benefits of the digital economy. We aspire to create an environment conducive to technological innovation, aligning with our national goals. Hence, the launch of DigSMART Scale-Up, a strategic initiative to expedite the digitalization of service delivery within the public sector.”
She added, “In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of Ghana has strategically placed “Fast Track Digitization” at the heart of our program for rejuvenation and ultimate transformation. This focus aligns with our commitment to fostering increased digital literacy and crafting a comprehensive National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy.
“Allow me to share the remarkable progress we’ve made in the inaugural year of DigSMART. We enrolled 170 participants from various civil and public service institutions. The outcomes of the first year have been nothing short of transformative, and the success stories of those 170 participants stand as a testament to the program’s efficacy.
“This year, we embark on the second phase of DigSMART with great enthusiasm. I am delighted to announce that we are enrolling a staggering 830 participants from across the country. This significant surge in enrollment speaks volumes about the growing recognition and importance of digital skills in our public sector.”
Dr. Evans Aggrey Darkoh, the head of Civil Service, on his part underscored the importance of fostering technology literacy among citizens, particularly the workforce.
He emphasized that in today’s fast-changing world, where technology is continually advancing, it is crucial for individuals and institutions to stay ahead of the curve to meet the growing demands and aspirations of the populace.
Dr. Darkoh stressed the necessity of building the capacity and skills of the workforce to meet these demands effectively.
He highlighted the significance of partnerships like the one with the Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT, which he said aims to provide not only enthusiasm but also the necessary tools and competencies for delivering results.
