Djs don’t play my songs – Akosua Agyapong on why she has stopped releasing
Highlife musician, Akosua Agyapong has expressed her distaste for the absence of songs with good lyrical content on Ghanaian airwaves indicating that has been her major reason for not releasing songs in recent times.
According to the accomplished singer, songs by veteran musicians are hardly played on air, rather somewhat unreasonable songs from the new crop of artistes enjoy most airplay.
“I still release songs but when I do, the Djs don’t play. You will deliver to them but they won’t play. I recently released an 8 track album but it was not promoted well by the media houses and Djs. They don’t appreciate the sensible songs we do. When they play one or two times during an interview, they stop right there but rather gives attention to the other songs.
“It’s like they(Djs) expect some money from us before they play but we the veteran musicians, you don’t expect us to pay before you play our songs. I am saying this with passion. There are a lot of songs but how to get to the masses is the issue” she said in an interview on Okay FM monitored by thepublisheronline.com.
In 1992, Akosua Agyapong formed the Highlife Supergroup NAKOREX together with fellow Highlife artists Nat Brew and Rex Omar, the group’s name being an acronym made up of the first letters of each member’s name and released the song ‘Kpanlogo’.
Her first album, Frema was released on January 1, 1990. It was full of inspirational songs like Me ye Obaa which became an instant hit.
After the success of her album, she met Nat Brew and Rex Omar, who inspired her to release her subsequent album, Kokokoo, another instant hit.
Akosua has five albums to her credit. She was honored in August 2019 at event dubbed “Celebrating Akosua Adjepong 30@50”.
