The residents of Domeabra in the Greater Accra Region are up in arms against a private business man, Emmanuel Tetteh over allegations of illegally selling off parts of the public cemetery in the town to developers.
He explained that the 18-acre land was set aside many years ago to be used only as a cemetery insisting that the purpose must not change.
Nii Gyaase Kofi Lantei II Leader of the Council of Elders of Domeabra, was emphatic that said the encroachment on the public cemetery was not only unlawful but also posed a grave environmental risk to the town dwellers.
Speaking at a news briefing in Accra yesterday, Nii Lantei II stated “this is a serious issue and we have alerted the Assembly so we expect this to stop and the houses built demolished because it can cause some serious environmental problem”.
He emphasized that there is a vast land for residential purpose so the original purpose for which the land was set aside must not change because the land is a stool land and must remain a cemetery
Nii Lantei II served notice that the residents would hit the streets on a demonstration to draw the attention of the whole country to what they claim is an illegality if the authorities mandated to ensure that the illegal development was halted remains.
“We want the government to know that we intend to take another decision if nothing is done to stop him from selling and developing the cemetery”
Meanwhile a media team that visited the said parcel of land realized that there were construction work ongoing with buildings at various stages of completion.
