Don’t Disappoint Us – Boye Laryea

“Use the items you are receiving today for the intended purpose so that you would be beneficial to your family and the country at large.”

These were the words of Mr. Boye Laryea, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly (ONMA) in Accra when he handed over some income generating equipments to Persons With Disability, (PWD’s) in the Municipality.

The gesture is part of efforts by the government through the Assembly to make PWD’s economically independent in their various communities.

In an address at the handing over ceremony, Mr. Laryea tasked the beneficiary groups to give meaning to the items and monies received.

He indicated that some of the beneficiaries sell the equipment’s given them while others who receive  cash donations use it for other things,” stressing that “these are for you; use it for the purpose for which they were purchased.”

Mr. Laryea noted that all the initiatives of the President, Nana Akufo-Addo are geared towards the wellbeing of the citizens.

Mentioning the School Feeding Programme, Free Senior High School and the Planting For Food And Jobs, Mr. Laryea stated that plans are underway to lobby for an increment of their share of the Common Fund from the current 3 percent to 4 percent.

Touting the achievements of the Nana Addo-led government in PWD matters, he said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government maintained the 2 percent of the PWD’s share of the Common Fund until the President increased it to 3 percent insisting that it would soon be increased to 4 percent.

For this reason, Mr. Laryea urged the beneficiaries to vote massively for President Akufo-Addo in the December polls.

“We will do everything within our means to make you happy, to make you feel that you are part of us and as one people. As the President’s representative in the Municipality, we shall do this, we love you…” the ONMA MCE assured.

Mr. Joshua Arddy, Chairman of the Disability Fund Management Committee said the distribution of the items “is to empower, encourage, motivate and to put PWD’s in good standing in order to have dignifying lives.”

He warned that those who received cash donations must not go and “remarry” but to use the money for fruitful economic ventures.

In all, over forty PWD’s received assorted equipments worth hundreds of Cedis.

These include; deep freezers, sewing machines, shoe grinding machines and gas ovens.

Other PWD’s had their school fees paid and startup capitals for any business of choice.
