Don’t Be Self-Serving …NHC Tells Politicians

The National House of Chiefs (NHC) has expressed concern about, what it says is the rising political tension at a time the country is battling to defeat the novel coronavirus – Covid-19, and other socio-economic challenges.

The chiefs said it appeared to them that “political leaders in the country appear to be more concern about winning power than the development needs and happiness of our people”.

As chiefs, they had a responsibility and duty to speak objectively on national issues and in defense of national interest, it added.

The House reminded “all Ghanaians to subordinate individual interest and political party loyalty to the national desire for peace, unity and development”.

These were contained in a statement jointly signed by Togbe Afede XIV, President and Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII, Vice President of the House, in Kumasi.

It said what Ghana needed now was absolute peace and unity to fight the spread of respiratory illness and tackle other development challenges facing the nation.

The NHC called for the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure that every qualified person had their names on the new voters roll that would be compiled so that no eligible Ghanaian would be denied the right to exercise their franchise in a free, fair and transparent manner, in the December elections.

The statement asked all to make a sober reflection and evaluation of the nation’s progress over the years and recommit themselves to the ideals that inspired the founding fathers of the nation.
