Popular Ghanaian actor and celebrated politician, John Dumelo, has come under a growing pressure from social media users to honour his own words and trek barefooted from Accra to Lagos as he had publicly promised to do if the Super Eagles won against the Black Stars in last Friday’s match.
“There’s no way Nigeria will win today’s match. If they do, I, John Setor Dumelo, will walk barefoot from Accra to Lagos tomorrow morning with ginger on my head! Super Eagles my foot!”, John Dumelo, ahead of the Ghana-Nigeria World Cup Qualifier, had written in a Facebook post.
The Ghanaian actor had very high hopes his country would win the said match but his high hopes ended in tears and he is now under public pressure to walk the talk.
However, the actor, in his characteristic jovial rebuttals, took to the same Facebook page a day after the match to offer some sort of public relations explanations which has still not appeased his fans.
Dumelo reminded the persons daring him to walk the talk that the fact that the Black Stars did not win the match does not mean the Super Eagles won and that his exact threat was that he would walk to Lagon if the Super Eagles had won.
“I know a lot of people wanted to see me walk from Accra to Lagos this morning if the Super Eagles has won. I am a man of my words. I would have walked but spiritually, I knew what I was saying. Kudos Super Eagles and Black Stars. Yours truly, John Dumelo”
The Super Eagles of Nigeria proved a hard nut to crack in the cagey encounter at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi last Friday.
The Black Stars did their utmost best to carry the day but their efforts were not enough to beat their opponents.
Black Stars midfield dynamo, Mohammed Kudus, who is blessed with a quick feet, easily terrorized the Nigerians.
On the 35th minute, Kudus unleashed a powerful goal-bound shot, which was saved by the Nigerian goalkeeper.
The Ghanaians, who were poised for victory, backed by the home fans, applied more pressure in the second half.
But try as the Black Stars did, they could not find an opening in the Nigerian defense to score a single goal.
The return leg to determine which of the two teams would book a place in the Mundial is slated for the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, reports indicated that pickpockets had a field’s day at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Friday evening.
These criminals took advantage of the Ghana-Nigeria game to steal mobile phones and other valuables from soccer fans.
