e-Ananse Reach Out to Kayayei
Some head porters popularly known as ‘Kayayei’ in the Greater Accra Region on August 23, 2019, benefitted from a book reading session organised by e- Ananse library, a non-governmental organisation (NGO).
The activity was aimed at educating the porters who were mostly made up of women and teenage girls on how to reduce their vulnerabilities, as they do their work.
Two videos were streamed for the kayayei, one was a folktale where Ananse tried to steal all the wisdom of the world and the other was on the origin of the popular Northern attire called the Fugu.
After the video streaming the kayayei were able to draw moral lessons in the folktale, they also got to know everything about the Fugu which they didn’t know before.
Head of the ‘Kayayie’ , Mr Mohammed Inusah – who was appreciative of the gesture also called on stakeholders to pay more attention to the living conditions of ‘Kayayei’ which were deplorable, making them vulnerable.
“It is because of poverty that they are here in the Capital. If not, there was no way as humans they would have come to sleep on the open space and compromise their safety and health,
”The girls learned a very great lesson, the videos inspired them. They have not adhered to such an atmosphere of a library before. I suggest more of this should be done to empower the girls more” he said in an interview with the media.
According to him, the interaction also helped to improve the confidence level of the young girls.
Management of e-Ananse has revealed their plans to engage the kayayei monthly to inspire and empower them through video streaming and book reading sessions.

Each library has an e-Ananse technology centre, christened the Innovation Hub, which is equipped with internet-enabled PCs to give library-members access to the full range of resources available on the World Wide Web.
The libraries are the CSR initiative of West Blue Consulting, an indigenous IT solution firm.
The official launch of the e-Ananse Libraries will take place at the University of Ghana, Legon on, 30th August 2019 at 10:00 am.
The launch will not only be a celebration of the opening of the new libraries, but a commemoration of Ghanaian story-telling in all its forms, from the oral to the written.
