The Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress, Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, has voiced serious concerns regarding the Electoral Commission’s preparedness for the upcoming 2024 elections.
These concerns have arisen amidst perceived delays in the planning for the December 7th polls.
In an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM with Selorm Adonoo on March 1, 2024, Dr. Tanko-Computer highlighted a critical issue: with just 8 months left until the elections, the Electoral Commission has yet to release a crucial calendar detailing the election schedule, including the procurement of necessary electoral materials.
According to Dr. Tanko-Computer, the absence of this calendar, which ideally should have been made available as early as January, hampers the ability of all concerned parties to adequately prepare.
He emphasized the significance of the calendar, as it lays out essential activities leading up to December 7th, such as the commencement of the limited registration exercise and the acquisition of electoral materials.
The lack of transparency in this process is particularly troubling to Dr. Tanko-Computer, who remarked, “There’s no calendar.”
Dr. Tanko-Computer’s concerns extend to the need for clarity from the Electoral Commission on crucial aspects like the registration process and nomination timelines.
Without this vital information, stakeholders are left in a state of disarray, unable to properly organize for the upcoming elections. Dr. Tanko-Computer’s assessment of the situation is blunt: “I must say this current EC appears not ready for the December 7 elections.”
His message to the Electoral Commission is clear: the timely release of a comprehensive
calendar is essential for ensuring a smooth and transparent electoral process. Without it, the ability of all involved parties to adequately prepare and participate in the democratic process is significantly compromised.
Dr. Tanko-Computer’s call for transparency and clarity underscores the importance of a well-organized and properly communicated electoral timeline.
