Establish Sanitation Taskforces in Schools – Boye Laryea
The Okaikwei North Municipal Chief Executive, Nii Boye Laryea has ordered the establishment of sanitation taskforce in all basis schools in the Municipality.
This he said is to augment efforts by the Assembly aimed at reducing the prevalence of insanitary conditions in the municipality.
Mr. Boye Laryea noted that the assembly will ensure an end to insanitary conditions in the constituency forming a task force base in every basic school in the municipality
“We are going to task all school teachers to take five minutes of their teaching time to teach the children something about hygiene …Teachers must make it mandatory.”
The Okaikwei North MCE, speaking at a community engagement which also coincided with his first anniversary since his assumption of office as MCE was emphatic that the municipal assembly will go to the schools with its health inspectors to check the progress of work by the taskforce.
Mr. Laryea stated that it is said the country is still grappling with filth in this scientific age when other countries had converted their waste to money adding that Ghana does not know how to tackle its sanitation issues.
While questioning the reasons for the abandonment of sanitary practices such as the inspection of pupils fingers nails, uniforms and teeth at school assemblies, the ‘sama’ ‘sama’ system (Sanitary inspectors used to visit homes to ensure people lived healthy lives) that existed in the 50’ and 60’s stressed that Ghana ought to go back to those the days of old.
“The county has to go to the basics; today I am declaring Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly as one of the Assemblies that will lead the fight against filth. Together with my administration, we are going to take charge of the sanitation issue in the country.”
While urging all to join the Assembly in the fight against filth in the Municipality, Mr. Boye Laryea warned: “From today, nobody should think that he is above the law, anybody found culpable of any of the sanitation offences will be prosecuted, we will not listen to any pleadings from anyone.”
Earlier, the MCE led a match dubbed the “No, No, No Campaign” through the principal streets of the constituency with over one hundred pupils from various basic schools in the Municipality in attendance.
They carried placards some of which read: “Keep The City Clean;” Say No To Street Hawking; Say No To Open Air Cooking; Say No To Open Defecation; Clean Your Environment; Get A Litter Bin; Clean Your Environment, Healthy living.
