The number of females involved in ‘counterfeit money business’ in Kumasi, the capital of Ashanti Region, has increase in recent times as compared to males.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command have managed to apprehend 16 of the female suspects, whose ages ranged from 17 to 40.
The police have also instituted new security measures and strategies to help apprehend the leaders of the fake money business.
Again, the police have admonished the public to be on the lookout so that they would not fall prey to the fake money syndicate, which they admitted to be on the rise.
ASP Godwin Ahianyo, the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), said the 16 caged ladies were in possession of counterfeit GHC200 and GHC100 notes.
He said the police managed to retrieve counterfeit money to the tune of GHC24,000, which are in GHC100 and GHC200 denominations from the fake money dealers
ASP Ahianyo said counterfeit money dealers usually use higher denominations to buy items and take a change of genuine cash back.
He said mobile money vendors and shopping marts are the main targets of the fake money dealers. He urged the public to beware.
ASP Ahianyo urged operators of shopping marts and super markets to purchase currency detectors in order to avert being duped.
He reiterated that the police are determined to end the fake currency syndicate in the city so he called for massive public support.
