Tough-talking artiste manager, Nana Asiamah Hanson, mostly known as Bulldog, has sued popular dancehall artiste, Charles Nii Armah Mensah widely known as Shatta Wale for defamation.
Shatta Wale, on Wednesday November 2, through a post on social media, alleged that Bulldog had told him he had planned the murder of the late Fennec Okyere who was the Chief Executive of Mad Time Entertainment and manager of musician Kwaw Kesse.
He, at age 31, was murdered at on Thursday, March 13, 2014.
“Bull Dog since u r bringing out secrets. You will tell Ghanaians What happen to Fenicks Murder !! And I am not joking about this time !! I am ready to tell the court about what you told me about you and your men and how planned that foolish act get ready This Akuffo Addo won’t give you a murder chance to be on our streets !!! Watch how this ends !!! You can’t fight time !!!”, was what was posted on Shatta’s officially verified Facebook wall, ‘Shatta Wale (Shatta Movement)’
The post raised a lot of eyebrows and even got the Ghana Police Service to issue a public statement to reveal the outfit was taking the accusations serious:
The Police statement read: “The attention of the Ghana Police Service has been drawn to a Facebook post by Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jnr., popularly known as Shatta Wale regarding the death of artiste Manager Fennec Okyere.
“The Police have made contact with Shatta Wale who is cooperating with us on the matter.
“The Police would like to put on record that the recently established Cold Case Unit, has been working for months on all unresolved murder cases, including that of Fennec Okyere with support from the affected families.
“This new development from Shatta Wale is therefore going to complement our ongoing investigation.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the families who have been working with the Cold Case Unit since its establishment for their cooperation and understanding.
“We wish to assure the public that the Police will continue to work relentlessly on these cases in order to bring closure to the affected families.”
Bulldog in a writ filed on Monday (7 November) argued that Shatta Wale had repeatedly gone public with claims damaging his reputation and connecting him to the murder of Fennec Okyere.
Bulldog is therefore seeking a court order for Shatta Wale to retract his “defamatory” statements and apologise without reservation for eight days.
He is also requesting special and punitive damages against his former artiste for the publication.
Bulldog’s lawyers indicated that these statements seek to suggest that he planned, effected or had a hand in Mr Okyere’s death.
They added that Shatta Wale’s claims also meant “that the Plaintiff is a criminal gangster and a danger to society and ought to be in jail (rather than walk freely in the streets).”
Also, “that his (the Defendant’s) claims in the publication are factual, truthful, and must be taken seriously by the public and law enforcement authorities.”
They indicated that these statements have triggered a re-investigation into the death of Mr Okyere by the police.
Bulldog’s team insist that these statements are false, malicious and only defames the artiste manager.
