First Lady’s MBU Ready in January
THE MOTHER and Baby Unit (MBU), being built at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, will be ready for public use in January, 2018.
The First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo’s foundation, dubbed ‘Rebecca Foundation’, is the brain behind the construction of the ultra-modern medical complex.
Mothers and Babies were dying at will at KATH and this compelled the first lady to join hands with The Multi Media Group, to solicit for funds to start the project.
Stephen Coret, an Engineer of Africa Building Partners (ABP), who have been contracted to build the facility, has said the facility is 95 percent completed.
During a media tour at the project site on Wednesday, he confidently stated that “the facility would be opened to the public on January 15, 2018”.
Mr. Coret said the facility, which is almost complete, now boasts of Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Maternity Ward.
According to him, the facility would have power supply from solar and regular power, so there would not be power problems, when completed.
Mr. Coret noted that the facility would also boast of 5 delivery beds, 3 theaters, resuscitation area, lobby area, breast feeding room and monitors.
The facility would also have warmers for children, incubators fir pre-term babies, 120 baby cots, washing basins, nurses rooms and isolation room, among others.
He stated that the completion of the important facility would go a long way to help avert frequent deaths of mothers and babies at KATH.
