Five Shot Over Newmont Conession At Abirem

Five people sustained gunshot wounds at Abirem in the Birim North District of the Eastern region after Police opened fire on demonstrators protesting mining giant, Newmont Ghana.

Information indicate that the irate youth were protesting over some lands they claim have been illegally possessed by the mining company.

Reports say one of injured is in critical condition and has been transferred to the Koforidua Hospital while the rest have been rushed to a nearby clinic for treatment.

The protestors reportedly blocked roads and access routes to the community and attempted to reclaim the disputed lands.

The demonstrators were made up of residents from the 10 communities affected by mining activities in the District.

This is not the first time that the residents have embarked on demonstrations against Newmont Ghana.

Various attempts to reach the Police Commander of Abirem for comments have proved futile.
