THE KWAME Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi was virtually turned into a boxing arena on Sunday dawn.
This follows a fierce violent clash in public between two opposing groups on campus from the University Hall (Katanga) and the Unity Hall (Conti).
Two contenders for KNUST SRC positions from Katanga Hall and Unity Hall were being vetted on the day and confusion erupted between their supporters.
Right in the full glare of the public, the two groups turned the university into a boxing arena as they openly charged at each other in a dangerous fashion.
The open brawl, according to eyewitnesses reports, resulted in injuries to some of the students, who were rushed hospital to seek medical care.
The two groups, who were bent on spilling human blood also destroyed items such as glass and flower pots, serving as decoration in the school.
The KNUST security were readily on hand to separate the two feuding groups and restore law and order in the university, but there efforts were not enough.
Later on, police reinforcements were called to the campus and they (police) did a yeoman job to finally stop the brawl and restore law and order at the place.
Management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) later in the day announced that it had suspended – with immediate effect – all activities leading to this year’s SRC elections

A statement issued by the Deputy Registrar at the Office of University Relations, Dr Daniel Norris Bekoe, said a committee will be constituted to thoroughly investigate the matter and make appropriate recommendations for the consideration of authorities.
It noted that security officers made up of the police and KNUST’s security personnel present managed to restore calm.
“Management wishes to assure all parents, and stakeholders of the University that there is absolute calm and students are going about their normal activities peacefully.
“The University will continue to provide a safe and secure environment for productive academic work.”
