Free SHS Won’t Die – Napo
The Minister of Education, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh has assured that the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme has come to stay and will not die.
“Doomsayers have already failed because there is no turning back as far as Free SHS is concerned,” he said.
Speaking in a radio interview on Accra based Peace FM’s morning programme, Kokorokoo, Dr Prempeh said: “…every programme comes with its own problem but what is good about the current system is the fact that the government is dealing with the problems with all seriousness.”
According to him, those predicting the fall of the Free SHS are not being truthful to Ghanaians.
He said: “The government appreciates that education is for the greatest freedom and will make sure it succeeds.”
Dr. Prempeh said that the government’s commitment towards Free SHS has made it to develop a policy document.
“Head teachers have guidelines for the Free SHS so that they will not do things their own way… the government in an unprecedented move has supplied textbooks to all schools and that shows how serious the government is with education,” he said.
The Minister said the Free SHS has brought smiles on the faces of lots of Ghanaians and there is no way government will disappoint Ghanaians.
“My colleague Members of Parliament on both sides are commending the government for the Free SHS because parents are not coming to them for school fees anymore,” he said.
