Former President John Mahama has urged the Akufo-Addo government to arrest the owner of the now-defunct DKM Microfinance Limited and pay its aggrieved customers all their locked-up deposits as promised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the lead-up to the 2016 elections.
According to Mr. Mahama, the NPP, in the run-up to the 2016 elections, accused him and his wife of being the owners of the collapsed micro-finance firm and promised to retrieve for the clients, all their locked-up investments.
Addressing delegates of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Dormaa East Constituency at Wamfie, as part of his five-day campaign tour of the Brong Ahafo Region he stressed that, the NPP government must ensure the owner of the company is arrested and all customers settled appropriately.
According to him, there should be no difficulty fulfilling that promise to the customers of the defunct DKM.
“When we were in office, the NPP lied that DKM belonged to me and my wife. Today, you are in power, you know who DKM belongs to, you promised that you will retrieve the people’s money for them when you come into power; please collect their DKM money and give it back to them,” he said.
Woes of DKM customers
Thousands of customers of DKM Microfinance Company lost their investments running into millions of cedis after the central bank in 2015 suspended the operations of DKM for violating the banking Act.
Though the central bank subsequently lifted the ban on the company’s operations, DKM was unable to pay its customers their locked up cash.
The Bank of Ghana confiscated the assets of the company and appointed the Registrar General’s Department to commence liquidation process to refund customers of the company.
DKM Customers Angrily Welcome Nana Addo To Brong Ahafo Region
The President of the Republic Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo who was on a “working visit” to Brong Ahafo had a bad accord of welcome from citizens of the area.
One of the customers angrily said, some Members of Parliament who convinced them to vote including Hon. Derrick Oduro, Hon. Kwaku Agyemang Manu and Hon. Baffour Awuah but now “they come home at night and go back to Accra in the morning”.
However, they have vowed to vote massively against the ruling government if they do not payback their lock-up monies to them.
It will be recalled that the Akufo-Addo when in opposition pledged the DKM customers in the region that when he’s voted into power will make sure that their monies are reimbursed to them. Withal, he’s been in power for seven months but nothing has been done about it.
