Galamsey Fight: Four More Arrested In Atewa Forest

Four more people have been arrested at the Atewa forest reserve in the Eastern region for engaging in illegal mining popularly known as galamsey.

The latest arrest of four suspected illegal miners adds to the many arrested in the forest reserve.

The four suspects were arrested mining in the deep forest of the reserve at Bomaa in Akyem kwarbeng at about 5am upon a tip off.

The suspects are, Richard Dampah, 25, Kofi Asomaning , 38,Logo Kwabena, 29, and Oscar Dartey ,17.

The Forest guards led by the Anyinam Range Manager, Palmer Aikens also retrieved 2 mining buckets , 2 headpans ,1 washing carpets ,shovels ,1 pick axe, gold dust, 3 olonka rice, tin tomatoes, onion, cooking utensil and 3 pumping machines.

They set ablaze tents erected by the Miners which served as temporal shelter.

Following the ban on illegal mining in Ghana, the miners have diverted their operations into deep Forest reserves in the region to avoid being arrested

The activities of the illegal miners in the Atewa forest reserve continue to deplete the vegetation and pollute the Birim, Densu and Ayensu rivers.
