Barely one week after a gas explosion killed a welder at Mpasatia in the Atwima Mponua District, in the Ashanti Region, another life was claimed yesterday by a similar incident.
Information reaching THE NEW PUBLISHER has confirmed that Mr. Anthony Ahiabu, a 47-year old employee of the Runel Filling Station at New Dawhenya in the Ningo Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region, was killed in a gas explosion at the filling station.
DOII William Blankson, Tema Regional Fire Service Operations Officer, who confirmed the incident, said the explosion happened at one of the rooms housing staffs of the filling station.
He said an ensuing fire, which was detected after the blast around 5am, would have burnt down the entire filling station but for the timely intervention of personnel from the Devtraco Fire Service Command.
It is not yet clear what might have caused the minor explosion, but unconfirmed sources say the deceased, Ahiabu Anthony, was cooking in one of the rooms housing workers of the station at a time gas was being discharged into an underground reservoir at the station’s compound.
DOII William Blankson tells THE NEW PUBLISHER investigations are still ongoing to unravel the cause of the explosion.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Tema General Hospital Morgue, awaiting autopsy.
