Richmond Numbo Saaka, lawyer for former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie has served notice that, they are prepared to take their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and the National Independent Tribunal over the elections committee ban on Afriyie from running the Association’s 2023 Presidential elections.
In an interview with Citi Sports, Esq. Richmond Numbo Saaka stated his client is ready to exploit all other options to seek redress on the matter.
“I have instructions from the client [George Afriyie], the instructions is based on the advice he has been given and the advice is informed by the very same GFA Statues and regulations. The statues and regulations say that you can file an appeal, if you are not happy with a certain decision and then you can head to the Court of Arbitration for Sports or the National Independent Arbitration Tribunal to deal with (an) appeal that arise.
He added, “So we believe that, per the rules of the GFA, these are available options, we will head to the Court of Arbitration for Sports or engage the National Independent Arbitration Tribunal to help us appeal the decision of the Appeals Committee of the Ghana Football Association, because that is what the statues of the FA provides”.
Already the election that was supposed to had taken place on September 27 has faced interlocutory injunction from King Faisal Football Club, owned by Alhaji Karim Grusah.
In a legal filing submitted to the Accra High Court, King Faisal, through their legal counsel, James Kwame Quayson, argues that, according to the GFA’s statutes, a legitimate Congress cannot convene to elect the GFA President until the new members or representatives of the Executive Committee have been duly elected.
King Faisal Football Club is appealing to the court to prohibit the GFA from holding the impending elections until the necessary elections for representatives from the National League Clubs, Regional Football Association, and other constituent bodies have been properly carried out.
Additionally, King Faisal seeks a court declaration that initiating the nomination process for the GFA President’s election before conducting elections for the Executive Committee representatives is both incorrect and unlawful.
