GES to Cut Ties with IT Firm Over ‘Half-Baked Services’

The Ghana Education Service (GES) is set to terminate the contract that it has with an IT firm, Eduvid Limited, and surcharge it for failing to deliver on a deal to supply some internet services to some Senior High schools.

According to the 2016 Auditor General’s Report, the IT firm failed to provide the services associated with the multi-million cedi contract it won from the GES in 2016.

As an example, the firm failed to honour services to the tune of over GHc 11,000 at Odoben Senior High School in the Central Region,

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee in Takoradi on Thursday, the Director General of GES, Professor Kwasi Opoku Amankwah, indicated that steps had been taken so far to get the Eduvid to face the legal consequences of their actions

“We signed an agreement with Eduvid, and the idea was that they were going to provide some internet services for the schools, and once they had done that, the schools would remit them. The schools subsequently collected the money. For the records that we have, and we are still reconciling, some schools indicated that they had paid them [Eduvid]. For others, they have not. But generally, they were not able to live up to the expectation of the contract,” the GES boss told the committee.

He noted that the Service had met with the firm about two weeks ago making public specific concerns and conditions.

The GES also had some technical questions, of which the Eduvid reps were unable to answer.

“So we asked them to go back but what we want to do is to cancel the contract and also surcharge them too. [We want to take them through the appropriate processes so that they refund the monies that they have” For the schools that monies were paid to them, the services were not provided or for some of the series that were provided, they are half-baked services that we cannot even work with,” Prof. Opoku Amankwah stated.
