The Akufo-Addo led administration has announced a package of 24 scholarships for children of farmers and fishermen to pursue higher education.
The scholarship package, according to the President, is to make farming and the agriculture sector appealing to Ghanaians, especially the youth.
Announcing the scholarship package at the 34th National Farmers’ Day held at the Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale, President Akufo-Addo said the scholarship would cover the cost of the education of the children of farmers and fisher folks at the tertiary level.
“The scholarship will span undergraduate level to the PhD level in any agriculture-related field of interest of the candidate,” the President said.
According to him, farmers would have to be adequately trained in modern farming practices, hence the package to support their wards in the sector.
He disclosed that government has partnered a university in the Czech Republic to train farmers’ children in agric-related short courses.
“This year, government has added to the national awards package for farmers and fisherfolk, a total of 24 scholarships for the wards of farmers and fishermen ,” he indicated adding that the package was a testament to how the government was making agriculture attractive to all, especially the youth.
This year, 91 farmers from the national and regional levels picked various awards at the National Farmers Day event.
National Farmers’ Day is commemorated each year to honour Ghanaian farmers and fishermen. The occasion is also used to acknowledge the vital role of farmers in ensuring the nation’s socio-economic development.
