Ghana & Cuba To Strengthen Relations
Ghana and Cuba have pledged to strengthen Bilateral and Parliamentary relations between the two countries.
This came to light when the Cuban Vice President, Mercedes Lopez Acea confered with Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament during a three-day official visit to Ghana.
The Speaker, Professor Aaron Michael Oquaye noted that it will be very useful for the two countries to have Parliamentary exchanges in order to learn best practices from each other.
He stated that people must always continue to learn no matter their levels of experience.
Prof Oquaye commanded Cuba for commanding lots of respect especially after the second World war which inspired many African nations to deter colonial rule.
He noted that Cuba was working side by side with Ghana in the 1957 when Ghana gained independence leading to the opening of Embassies in both countries.
The Cuban Vice President, Her Excellency Mercedees Lopez Acea said Cuba is keen on interparliamentary relations between the two countries, which she said is good for both countries.
She has therefore requested that Cuba and Ghana’s Parliament strengthen friendship bonds for their mutual benefit.
The Vice President who described Ghana as a friendly country and commended Ghana’s Ambassador to Cuba for working to strengthen bilateral bonds between the two countries.
Cuban, she said is pleased with the long-standing relations with Ghana which is the first African country to have diplomatic relations with Cuban since the revolution, this he said is meaningful to her country.
The Vice President acknowledged the friendship relations between the two founding leaders which continued till today.
Lopez Acea commended Ghana for efforts to ensure Democratic stability in the African subregion and emphasised the beed to further strength bonds and friendship between both countries.
Cuba, she said has extended cooperation with Ghana beyond education and health to Agriculture and Sports for the mutual benefit of the government and people of both countries.
Lopez Acea said Cuba is proud for training several Ghanaian professionals in various fields whiles its professional working in Ghana and contributing to Ghana’s socioeconomic growth.
She expressed confidence of further strengthening bonds for economic development.
Expressed Appreciation from Cuba for Ghana’s constant support to that country for elimination of economic and financial support to Cuba by the US in all for a especially at the UN.
The Majority leader, Osei-Kyei-Mensah-Mensah, on his part, noted that the relations between the two countries dates back to the 1950s, when Cuba started having problems with the US government.
He noted the support Cuba rended to many African Countries including Ghana with medical care among others.
The Suame Member of Parliament said the two Nations must identify areas of cooperation to strengthen existing bonds between them.
He identified sugarcane and sugar production as one such and hope Cuba would share some lessons for the benefit of Ghana.
The leader also praised the maintenance culture of Cuba, where according to him Taxi models that were no longer in use in Ghana since the 40s was still in use in Cuba.
He assured Cuba that Ghana which has two dominant political parties, NDC and NPP are not extreme in ideology and noted that agreements entered into with Cuba by previous governments would not be discontinued by ensuing governments.
A representative of the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, MP for Wa Central, Joseph Yileh Chireh acknowledged the contribution of Cuba to the education of Ghanaian youth, where a school in that country was named after, Dr Kwane Nkrumah.
He noted various countries had support from Cuba in the anti- colonial struggle.
