Ghana secures silver at 2024 Men’s Volleyball Championship in Ivory Coast

Ghana U-19 men’s volleyball team delivered an impressive performance, securing the silver medal at the recently concluded 2024 U-19 Nations Volleyball Championship in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

The determined Ghanaian squad, led by experienced coach Seidu Ajanako, was narrowly defeated by Sierra Leone in the finals, losing in two straight sets with scores of 21-13 and 21-11.

Despite this loss, they qualified for the 2024 Volleyball World Championship in China.

The team’s journey began with a victory over DR Congo in three sets. Although they suffered a setback against Namibia, losing 21-13 and 21-18, they still advanced to the quarterfinals.

In a thrilling rematch, Ghana avenged their earlier defeat by overcoming Namibia in straight sets (22-20, 25-23). They continued their strong performance by defeating DR Congo once again in the semi-finals (22-20, 21-18), earning a spot in the finals.

The young and less experienced Ghanaian team faced a tough challenge in the finals, succumbing to Sierra Leone in a one-sided match (21-13, 21-11).

Despite not winning the ultimate title, the team displayed significant promise and talent, with standout players like Emmanuel Abbey (blocker) and Ebenezer Anyetei (defender) making notable contributions.

The team was accompanied by Mr. George Tettey, President of the Ghana Volleyball Association, and Mr. Mohammed Aputeog, an Executive Board Member.

Other senior players, including Kelvin Carboo, Phillip Amissah, and Emmanuel Adamitey, also supported the team during the tournament.

Executive Board Member Mohammed Aputeog praised the team’s achievements, noting, “We could’ve won gold but for their inexperience. It’s their first time competing on the national level.”

He also discussed the team’s preparations for the upcoming World Championship in China, emphasizing the need for funding and support.

Training is expected to resume after a week of rest to address any errors and prepare the players for the upcoming challenge.

The Ghana U-19 men’s volleyball team has shown great potential and is determined to improve its performance at the 2024 World U-19 Volleyball Championships.
