Ghana’s sports administration has undergone a major restructuring, with the new government splitting the Ministry of Youth and Sports into two separate entities.
On Saturday, President John Dramani Mahama announced the decision, made under Section 11 (3) of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (P.N.D.C. Law 327). The Ministry of Sports and Recreation will now oversee the country’s sports sector, while the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment will independently manage youth affairs. This move ends the long-standing union of youth and sports under one ministry.
This restructuring is part of a larger government reorganization that reduces the number of ministries from 30 to 23, compared to the previous administration.
As part of the next phase of ministerial appointments, President Mahama will announce the 28th Sports Minister next week.
Nii Lante Vanderpuije, a former Sports Minister, and Wisdom Kobla Woyome, chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee for Sports during the eighth parliament, are among the leading candidates for the role.
