Ghana Standards Authority Suspends Easypass Programme
The Ghana Standards Authority has stated that it has suspended the implementation of the EasyPass Programme.
This follows a publication that the implementation of the programme will commence on May 1st 2018.
According to the publication, the EasyPass Programme is aimed at ensuring that some selected products imported into Ghana meet the required standards to protect public health and safety.
By this, all inferior products imported into Ghana will face ejection.
However in an interview with Citi Business News, the Head of Public Relations at the Ghana Standards Authority, Kofi Amponsah Bediako explained that the programme has been suspended to allow for further engagement with stakeholders.
“The programme, EasyPass, has been suspended and government will want us to put a stop to it so that we will look within and see how best to deal with the programme”.
He explained that the Authority was late in preventing the publication which announced the implementation of the programme.
He has since advised the concerned stakeholders not to react to earlier publications concerning the programme
“The communication came very late and so the advertisement had already gone and that is why we find ourselves in this situation. But the important part is that the programme Easy Pass has been stopped and that is why it will no longer take place for now so the concerned stakeholders should take note of this”.
Other programmes suspended by government
Government earlier suspended the Cargo Tracking Note (CTN) at the ports.
The CTN was introduced by government to track all imports to Ghana to reduce revenue losses associated with under declaration of goods at the ports.
Government also ordered the indefinite suspension of the proposed fumigation levy for shippers.
The policy, was aimed at fumigating all imported cargo upon arrival at the ports.
