Ghana is set to host Zone 3 qualifiers for the 2023 FIBA Africa Under 16 Championship for the Boys and Girls categories respectively.
The competition is scheduled to run from June 19 to June 24 in Accra; Citi Sports understands games will be held at the Eden Heights Sports Complex.
Benin, Togo, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Niger, Cote D’Ivoire are slated to compete in the qualifiers next month with Ghana fielding teams in both categories.
Winners of next month’s qualifiers will progress to the continental championship that is to be held in Tunisian cities Monastir and Sousse from July 13 to 23rd.
The continental champion and the first runner up in the men’s category progresses to the FIBA Under 17 World Cup that is expected to be held in Turkey in 2024. The Women’s Under 17 World Cup is to be held in Mexico in 2024.
The upcoming tournament is set to be Ghana’s first participation in the competition; the FIBA Africa Under 16 tournament has been held biannually since 2009 with Egypt winning five of seven editions held.
The Ghana Basketball Association is expected to provide more details about the tournament in a press brief at a yet to be determined date.
