Minister of Information designate, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has advocated for laws that will help curb fake news in the media especially that of social media.
According to him, it is high time the nation looked at such laws to halt the spread of fake news.
“I share the view that we should begin to legislate against false news on social media,” Mr Oppong Nkrumah said when he appeared on the Appointments Committee of parliament on Friday, 26 October 2018.
The advent of social media has made the production and circulation of fake news very easy.
Several social media platform like Facebook and Twitter have taken measures to tackle the menace.
The minister-designate however, did not commit to a deadline when the Akufo-Addo-led government will lay a bill for the pursuance of ‘killing’ fake news.
Mr Opponng-Nkrumah was nominated to head the Information Ministry after President Akufo-Addo reshuffled some of his ministers.
