Ghanaians Celebrate Azumah Nelson as He Chalks 60
Ghanaians yesterday expressed love to boxing legend, Azumah Nelson, has he marked his 60th birthday.
The three times World Champion was full of praises from Ghanaians including Ex-President Rawlings.
Former President Rawlings who is credited with discovering and mentoring Azumah, in a congratulatory message lauded him for his humility and dedication.
Speaking on an Accra based radio station, he said “As successful as he became, he didn’t allow that to go to his head. Azumah retained his humility. Some people would have been spoilt a long time ago but not this man (Azumah).”
Renowned Sports Journalist Michael Oti also expressed sentiments appreciating the legend.
He tweeted “happy birthday to the greatest African boxer. Thank you for the amazing memories and priceless lessons, Azumah Nelson”.
Social media was filled with congratulatory messages from his followers, as way of showing appreciation to the legend.
Born on July 19, 1958 in Mamprobi, a suburb of Accra, Azumah Nelson said no to fate and with humility and determination became Africa’s greatest pugilist.
He fought 47 times, winning 39, losing 6 and drawing two of those bouts.
The legend is widely considered as the greatest African boxer of all time, and is currently the 17th greatest pound for pound boxer of all time in Boxrec’s ranking.
