A historic appearance was made by Ghanaian swimmer Harry Stacey at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, finishing seventh in heat 4 of the 100m freestyle.
On Tuesday, a time of 51.12 was recorded by Stacey, allowing him to beat Sri Lankan swimmer Kyle Abeysinghe and secure the seventh spot. Although the result may not have met Stacey’s hopes, a significant milestone for Ghanaian swimming was marked by his appearance in the prestigious event.
Stacey expressed his disappointment with his performance in his first competition at the Paris Olympics.
He acknowledged that his performance did not meet his expectations, marking a significant setback in this highly anticipated event. Harry Stacey’s mother, Eze Stacey, was thrilled to watch her son compete at the La Défense Arena.
It was a proud moment for her as she witnessed Harry’s hard work and dedication showcased on the world stage.
In Accra, strong support was shown by the swimming community, who rallied behind their pioneering athlete. Stacey’s journey to the Olympics was made possible through a wild card slot, making him the second male swimmer, after Abeiku Jackson, to represent Ghana in the sport at the Olympic level.
Notably, national records in the 100m freestyle (57.50) and 50m backstroke (26.14) are still held by the 24-year-old, demonstrating his potential for future success. Another chance for Ghana to shine in the pool will occur when Joselle Mensah competes in the Women’s 50m freestyle on Saturday, August 3, 2024.
Mensah’s upcoming event is eagerly anticipated by Ghanaian swimming fans, who are celebrating Stacey’s historic appearance and looking forward to more achievements from their athletes.
