A 13-year-old girl has been allegedly killed at Yawkwei near Juaso in the Asante Akyem South District of the Ashanti Region.
The father of the deceased, Anthony Obeng, told police that he found the half-naked body of his daughter, Bermaah Deborah, with her throat slashed on a farm near his cottage on Tuesday.
Confirming the incident to Citi News, the Juaso Police Commander, DSP Andrews Anyani, said, “after we received the call, my men and I went there together with the father and true to the reports, we saw this 13-year-old girl slain. She was slaughtered like how you slaughter a foul.”
Police later found the girl’s jeans and a torn underwear about 20 meters away from where the body was lying.
“We suspect that perpetrator wanted to defile the girl or he attempted to defile the girl and from fear that the girl will reveal anything, he decided to kill the girl,” DSP Anyani stated.
Subsequently, a 61-year old palm wine tapper who was picked up in connection with the crime is currently assisting police in investigations.
DSP Anyani noted that the girl’s body was found “in the midst of felled palm wine trees.”
“The palm wine tapper’s place is so close that if the girl was even screaming for help, the palm wine tapper if he were around, would have heard the girl’s cry. Based on suspicions, we had to pick him for questioning.”
The palm wine tapper however denied any culpability.
The girl’s body has been deposited at the Steward morgue for preservation and autopsy.
