The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has received a cheque of GH¢100,000.00 from Royal Cosu Hills, an upcoming hospitality project in the Upper West Region and GH¢30,000.00 from Ashfoam, a home furnishing company towards 2017 GJA Awards ceremony.
This year, the GJA flagship event on the theme: “State of Investigative Journalism, Boundaries of Privacy and Borders of Public Interest”, would take place on October 27 at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra..
Mr Roland Affail Monney, GJA President “It is only fair and morally justified that those who excel are rewarded handsomely not only by their employers but more importantly corporate Ghana and consumers of media content”.
He pointed out that investigative journalism was eventually chosen to allow the awards to create a huge deliberative platform to address lingering issues and emerging concerns over that specialised area of journalism.
He said despite the controversies surrounding the techniques of reportage by Ace Investigative Journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas to unveil corruption within the Ghana Football Association there was no doubt that Anas Aremeyaw Anas was among the best investigative journalists in the world and deserved to be encouraged.
“It is therefore necessary to take a critical look into investigative journalism and assess how to shape it in the fight against corruption,” he said.
Mrs Linda Asante Agyei, GJA Vice President expressed the profound gratitude of GJA to the two companies for their support.
She said even though it was the beginning of partnership with Royal Cosu, they had exhibited interest and appreciated the works of journalists in contributing to the development of the country.
Mr Michael Klugey, Project Manager of Royal Cosu Hills, popularly called ‘Jirapa Dubai’ said journalists undertake many risks in their line of duty to educate, inform, and entertain the general public.
He urged GJA to help boost tourism through journalism and promised to work hand in hand with the association to ensure that deserving journalists are rewarded.
Nana Yaw Ampem-Darko, Marketing Communications Manager, Ashfoam Ghana said the company considers the works of journalists as a vehicle to promote development.
“Therefore our management, which believes in the commendable efforts exerted by Journalists, decided to support the Association every year on a major project like the Awards ceremony to motivate all journalists to give off their best in the development of the nation’, he said.
He said Ashfoam has packages including living room furniture and mattresses for Journalists who emerge winners under categories of “Journalist of the Year; Most Promising Journalistr; Best Rural Reporter; and the Komla Dumor Award”.
