The total number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases worldwide surpassed 7 million early Monday, according to a running tally by US-based Johns Hopkins University.
The university’s data showed that the global tally of fatalities had reached 402,730, while the number of recoveries topped 3.14 million.
The US remains the worst-hit country with over 1.94 million infections, while its death toll exceeds 110,500.
Brazil, which has the largest number of COVID-19 cases and deaths in Latin America, has the second-highest number of cases worldwide with more than 691,700, followed by Russia with around 467,000 and the UK with over 287,600 cases.
Several European countries are also among the hardest hit in the world.
China, the ground zero of the virus, has registered 84,191 cases so far, including 79,434 recoveries. The country’s death toll stands at 4,638. Barely changing figures continue to raise questions in and outside China.
Overall, the virus has spread to 188 countries and regions since it first emerged in Wuhan, China last December.
Despite the rising number of cases, most people who contract the virus suffer mild symptoms before making a recovery.
Ghana Cases
COVID-19 confirmed cases have risen to 9,910 says the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
The service in its latest case management update also recorded an increase in the number of recoveries counting 3,645 so far.
Four more people have lost their lives pushing the death toll to 48.
Active cases now stand at 6,217.
Nigeria’s Cases Hit 12,486
Confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Nigeria have reached 12,486.
This is according to the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC).
In a tweet late Sunday night, June 7, the Center reported that Nigeria recorded 260 new cases to push its tally to 12,486.
It says the country’s death toll stood at 354, with recoveries now 3959.
Over 5,000 Deaths Recorded In Africa
More than 5,000 people have died of Covid-19 related deaths in Africa.
According the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (AfricaCDC) some 5,071 Covid-19 patients have succumbed to the infection.
The AfricaCDC in a tweet on June 7, indicated that 184,333 Covid-19 cases have been recorded in 54 Africa Union Member States.
Also, 81,780 people have recovered from the infection.
The tweet said, “As of 7 June 2020, 6 pm East Africa Time,
54 African Union Member States reporting 184,333 cases, 5,071 deaths, and 81,780 recoveries.”
