The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has expressed concern about the stalled implementation of a vehicle importation tax waiver that was part of its 2024 Conditions of Service agreement with the government.
In a letter dated Wednesday (19 February 2025), signed by GMA President, Dr (Med) Frank Serebour and General Secretary Dr (Dent) Richard Selormey, the Association noted that the waiver which took effect in July 2024 has been halted since January 2025, following a change in government.
According to the GMA, many members who paid for vehicles in advance are now incurring hefty demurrage charges due to the delay.
The letter advises members to either postpone or reduce vehicle imports until there is clarity on when the waiver will resume.
Alternatively, members may clear their vehicles at full cost to avoid further charges. Those unable to bear the additional expenses are reminded of their right to withhold certain payments, as outlined in their Conditions of Service.
The Association pledged to keep members updated on any new developments.
