Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has sent well wishes to the Black Stars, urging the team to go for gold in the ongoing 2019 Africa Cup of Nations taking place in Egypt.
Dr. Bawumia in a post on Facebook is confident the Black Stars can end the AFCON title drought this year and urged Ghanaians to rally behind the team.
“I wish the Black Stars of Ghana the best of luck…I urge the team to be focused and resilient in our quest to break the 37 years dry spell at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“As a country, let’s rally behind the Black Stars and provide them the necessary support to win the trophy for the fifth (5th) time in our football history,” Dr. Bawumia said.
Group F is one of the most interesting groups as it houses defending champions Cameroon, perennial favourites Ghana, and the minnows Benin, and Guinea-Bissau.
The Indomitable Lions and the Black Stars headline the group and have shared 9 trophies between them. However, Benin and Guinea-Bissau will definitely give them a run for their money, if their qualification campaigns are anything to go by.
The Black Stars enter every edition as among the favourites, and it’ll not be any different this time around. Andre Ayew will captain the Kwesi Appiah’s side in Egypt, and they will also count on the experienced Asamoah Gyan, who will play the General Captain’s role.
They topped their qualification group ahead of Kenya and will fancy their chances of going to at least, the quarterfinals. They have experienced players with the likes of Jonathan Mensah in the side.
They also have seven new faces in the team and will bank on the perfect mix to end their 37-year wait for the elusive AFCON title. They will, however, be buoyed by the fact that they have made it to the semifinals in the last six editions.
