Gov’t Committed to Paying Debts Owed Waste Service Providers
The Minister of Inner Cities and Zongo Development, Alhaji Boniface Abubakar Saddique has re-iterated government’s commitment to pay debt owed waste service providers which is hindering their ability to keep the various communities clean.
Speaking to the Media at a Clean-up exercise organized by the Ministry of Inner Cities and Zongo Development at Nima, Alhaji Boniface said most of these debts were inherited from the previous government which is a big challenge.
However, he said government is committed in paying all the debt.
The Minister led various stakeholders in the sanitation sector to clean Zongo communities as part of the “Agenda Clean Zongo” initiative which is aimed at achieving the President’s vision of making Accra a clean city.
He intimated that waste management in Zongo communities is key on the agenda of developing Zongos, adding that most of these communities’ struggle with proper waste management which is basically due to poor planning of the communities.
He appealed to the Zongo communities to adhere to good sanitary practices by cleaning their environment to avert diseases such as cholera, typhoid, hepatitis among others.
The Mayor of Accra, Nii Adjei Sowah, who also led the A.M.A team to undertake the cleaning exercise said that issues of sanitation is paramount and needs all hands on deck to help keep the communities clean.
Waste management companies such as Zoomlion, Jekora waste and notable celebrities were also at Nima to support the initiative.
