Gov’t Declares Monday, January 7 As Public Holiday
The Ministry for the Interior has declared Monday, January 7, 2019 as a public holiday adding that, it must be observed as such.
A statement issued and signed by Minister Ambrose Dery said the day “has been declared a Public Holiday as “Constitution Day”.
It further admonished the public to observe the day as such throughout the country.
In 2017, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, proposed that August 4 should be observed as Founders Day in memory of the successive generations of Ghanaians who contributed to the liberation of the country from colonial rule and September 21 set aside as a memorial day for Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President who was instrumental in the fight for the 6th March independence.
Government few weeks ago laud before parliament a bill seeking to amend the public holiday act.
The three are the African Union (AU) Day which is observed on May 25, the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day on September 21 and First Republic Day on July 1.
The following public holidays, New Year’s Day (January 1), Independence Day March 6, Good Friday and Easter Monday, Farmers’ Day, meanwhile will remain same.
